Diaspora Bank

Diaspora Bank – A Partnership that Builds Return

Croatia stands before an important opportunity to activate one of its greatest yet still underused economic potentials. Every year, the Croatian diaspora sends approximately six to seven billion euros through foreign-owned banks. The profit generated by these transactions leaves the country, while the Croatian economy loses capital that could drive growth and create new jobs. This is where the opportunity for meaningful change emerges.

The Diaspora Bank project is designed as a response to this need and as a mechanism that enables Croatia to regain control over its own financial flows. For the first time, within the Marshall Plan for Croatia initiative, there is a clear structure and institutional support that make this project realistically achievable. The diaspora, which for decades lacked systematic ways to invest in the homeland, now gains a transparent and reliable channel for returning capital to Croatia.

The potential is significant. Even if only a portion of current remittances remained within the Croatian financial system, it would create a strong foundation for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in production sectors where Croatia faces the greatest shortages. Many members of the business diaspora have expertise, experience and international networks precisely in these areas. The Diaspora Bank becomes the bridge that reduces risk, accelerates investment and enables returnees to launch projects more securely and efficiently.

Other countries show that such models work. Israel, India and Armenia successfully transformed their diasporas’ emotional connection into powerful development capital. Croatia has the same potential, provided there is a clear strategy and political will.

The Diaspora Bank gives our emigrants a new role. They are no longer only donors, but partners in Croatia’s development. This rebuilds trust that has been eroding for years and opens the door to long-term cooperation.

This project is not just an idea. It is a historic opportunity for Croatia to strengthen its financial sovereignty, encourage the return of its business diaspora and secure stable sources of investment. In a time of global uncertainty, reinforcing domestic financial instruments becomes essential.

It is time to unite knowledge, capital and the emotional bond with the homeland into one coherent development path. The Diaspora Bank can become the foundation of that new beginning.
